about

Skillet Good and Greasy, trad. Brooke brought this to the band and C is a great key for it. It really growls! Fiddle: GDAE Banjo: gCGCD

Valley Forge, trad. One of several tunes we learned in jams at Clifftop. Also, one of our D tunes that have a C chord in them, which for some reason, really catch our fancy. Fiddle: GDAE Banjo: aDADE

One Voice, Ruth Moody. Brooke heard this song from the Wailin’ Jennys. Moody wrote it to inspire peace and change. We love to promote peace!

Holloway, Hilary Dirlam. One year during a rainy Clifftop Lucy and Amy learned this tune while jamming in a tent with Hilary and friends. a place in our hearts. Fiddle: GDAE Banjo: aDADE

Grub Springs, trad. Amy learned this tune from the WPA recording of W.E. Claunch recording. It drew her in, so she listened to it several hundred times and brought it to the band. Fiddle: AEAE Banjo: aEAC#E

The Cuckoo, trad. Our version is inspired by playing of Doc Watson and Clarence Tom Ashley. Fiddle: GDAE Banjo: aEADE

Boys, My Money's All Gone, trad. Where does it all go? This one is a variation of the tune of the same name in the key of A, credited to Charlie Bowman, 1929. Another D tune with a C chord. Fiddle: GDAE Banjo: aDADE

I’ve Endured, Ola Belle Reed. Nancy liked this song and claimed it as her own! It reminds her of how we endure what comes our way in life. Fiddle: GDAE Banjo: gDGBD

Hommage a Edmond Pariseau, French Canadian reel. A tune by accordion player Marcel Messervier in honor of Québec fiddler Edmond Parizeau. Amy learned this tune from Todd Clewell and Barb Schmid. Fiddle: AEAE Banjo: aEAC#E

Little Bird of Heaven, Martha Scanlan. The lyrics of this song grabbed Amy the first time she heard it. If you pay attention, most of the time you really do have a little bird of heaven right here in your hand. Banjo: gCGCD

North Carolina Breakdown, Tennessee’s Fiddlin' Arthur Smith, c 1937. Mary Gordon and Hilary Dirlam mentioned that Arthur Smith’s guitar player played an E major chord in the B part, not an Em. A little awkward the first time you hear it, but then it grows on you. We like it. Fiddle: GDAE Banjo: gDGBD

Angelina Baker, Stephen Foster (public domain). Lucy heard a version of this with Foster’s verses and found it more interesting than the tune most old-time players learn early on. We end with the “common” tune. Fiddle: AEAE Banjo: aEAC#E

Fall on My Knees, trad. Round Peak song. Fiddle: GDAE Banjo: aDADE

Railroading Through the Rockies, trad. "Railroad Through The Rocky Mountains" is the official name of the tune. Jim Bowles, from Kentucky, is the source. He played it with the V chord, Amy's ear heard the VII, hence, yet another tune in D with a C chord. Fiddle: GDAE Banjo: aDADE

I’m Your Dog Blues, Brooke Lauer. Brooke sang this song to the rest of the band shortly after she wrote it, and we all fell in love with it. Amy does a fine job adding the blues guitar with Lucy on washboard. And we made an exception of all –female personnel on this tune to add Bob Buckingham on blues harmonica.

Track Name: Skillet Good and Greasy
Chorus:
Cornbread and beans
And them good old collard greens
Keep my skillet good and greasy all the time, time, time
Skillet good and greasy all the time

Well if you don't believe I'm right
Well come home with me tonight
We can lay around my shanty all the time, time, time
Lay around my shanty all the time

(Chorus)

Well If you say so
I'll never moonshine no more
I will tear down my still house
And go home, go home
I'll tear down my still house
And go home

(Chorus)

Well if you want to eat right
Well come home with me tonight
I’ll fix you beans and taters any time, time, time
Fix you beans and taters any time

(Chorus)
Track Name: One Voice
This is the sound of one voice
One spirit, one voice
The sound of one who makes a choice
This is the sound of one voice
This is the sound of one voice

This is the sound of voices two
The sound of me singing with you
Helping each other to make it through
This is the sound of voices two
This is the sound of voices two

This is the sound of voices three
Singing together in harmony
Surrendering to the mystery
This is the sound of voices three
This is the sound of voices three

This is the sound of all of us
Singing with love and the will to trust
Leave the rest behind it will turn to dust
This is the sound of all of us
This is the sound of all of us

This is the sound of one voice
One people, one voice
A song for every one of us
This is the sound of one voice
This is the sound of one voice
Track Name: The Cuckoo
Oh the cuckoo she’s a pretty bird
And she warbles as she flies
She never hollers coo-coo
'Til the fourth day of July

Oh the cuckoo she’s a pretty bird
How I wish that she were mine
She’d never drink water
She’d only drink wine

Well I've played cards in Texas
And I've played cards in Maine
I'll bet you ten dollars
I'll beat you at your game

Jack of diamonds, Jack of diamonds
Oh I know you of old
You’ve robbed my poor pockets
Of my silver and my gold

Gonna build me a log cabin
On a mountain so high
So I can see my Willie
As he goes riding by

Oh the cuckoo she’s a pretty bird
And she warbles as she flies
She never hollers coo-coo
'Til the fourth day of July
Track Name: I've Endured
Born in the mountain, fifty years ago
Climbed these hills and valleys through the rain and snow
Seen the lightning flashing, I’ve heard the thunder roll
I've endured, I've endured, how long can one endure

Barefoot in the summer, on into the fall
Too many mouths to feed, they couldn't clothe us all
Sent to church on Sunday to learn the golden rule
I've endured, I've endured, how long can one endure

I've worked for the rich, I've lived with the poor
I've seen many a heartache, there’ll be many a more
I've lived loved and sorrowed, been to success's door
I've endured, I've endured, how long can one endure
I've endured, I've endured, how long can man endure
Track Name: Little Bird of Heaven
Well, I lit out from your back door
Kicked an old can fifty miles or more
Written right there on the side of the can
There's a little bird of heaven right here in your hand

Well, I looked up and I looked back
Walked a hundred miles down the railroad track
All's I can tell from where I stand
There's a little bird of heaven right here in your hand

Chorus:
So toss it up or pass it round
Pay mind to what you're carryin' round
Keep it close, hold it while you can
There's a little bird of heaven right here in your hand

Well love they tell me is a fragile thing
It's hard to fly on broken wings
Lost my ticket to the promised land
There's a little bird of heaven right here in your hand

Chorus

Fallen hearts and fallen leaves
Starlings light on the broken trees
I find we all need a place to land
There's a little bird of heaven right here in your hand

Chorus
Hmmmm
Track Name: Angelina Baker
Way down yonder on the old plantation that’s where I was born,
I used to beat the whole creation hoein' in the corn:
Oh! then I worked and then I sang, so happy all the day,
‘Till Angelina Baker came and stole my heart away.

Chorus:
Angelina Baker! Angelina Baker's gone
She left me here to weep a tear and beat on the old jaw bone.

I've seen my Angelina in the spring time and the fall,
I've seen her in the corn field and I've seen her at the ball;
And every time I met her she was smiling like the sun,
But now I'm left to weep a tear ‘cause Angelina's gone.

Chorus

Angelina is so tall she never sees the ground,
She has to take a wellumscope to look down on the town
Angelina likes the boys as far as she can see them,
She used to run old Massa ‘round to ask him for their freedom.

Chorus

Early in the morning of a lovely summer day
I ask for Angelina, and they say she's gone away
I don’t know where to find her, ‘cause I don't know where she's gone,
She left me here to weep a tear and beat on the old jaw bone.

Chorus
Track Name: Fall On My Knees
Fall On My Knees

Well, I fall on my knees and I pray to you
Come and stay with me, little girl
Come and stay with me

Look up, look down that long lonesome road
Before you travel on, little girl
Before you travel on

I wish to the Lord I’d never been born
Or died when I was young, little girl
Or died when I was young

I would never have seen those two blue eyes
Or heard your lying tongue, little girl
Heard your lying tongue

You told me one, you told me two
You told me ten thousand lies, little girl
Told me ten thousand lies

Well you told me more lies than the stars in the sky
You’ll never get to heaven when you die, little girl
Never get to heaven when you die

My suitcase is packed and my trunk she’s done gone
It’s goodbye little woman I’m gone, I’m gone
It’s goodbye little woman I’m gone
Track Name: I’m Your Dog Blues
I spend my day at home alone
I cannot wait ‘til you come home
You write about me on your blog
I’m your profile picture, I’m your dog

Woman’s best friend I hear they say
I’m by your side most everyday
Wherever you go I ride along
I’ve got shotgun, I’m your dog

When lightning cracks I’ll be right there
I’ll let you know there’s nothing to fear
I may be long as you are tall
But I’ll climb in your lap ‘cause I am your dog

I roll in the mud, I do it for you
I roll in some things that make you go “eww”
My favorite scent is Eau de frog
I like it dirty, I’m your dog

Won’t you let me lie at the foot of your bed
A nice soft place to rest my head
You’re counting sheep, I’m sawing logs
You’ll never sleep while I’m your dog

I spend my day at home alone
I cannot wait ‘til you come home
You write about me on your blog
I’m your profile picture, I’m your dog
